Ostrich – our all time favorite dinner!
Whenever we serve ostrich in the house, there are lots of ‘mmmm’ ‘yummmmm’ sounds! And ostrich really isn’t very expensive! You buy it frozen from Natural Grocers (it comes in a package of 2 filets and they look super super tiny, but are actually really satisfying). You will not be disappointed with this recipe 🙂
- 2 ostrich filets
- unsalted butter
- worcestershire sauce
- hot sauce
- ground pepper
- 1 T olive oil
Sprinkle filets on both sides with pepper and set aside. Brush a heavy skillet or pan with oil and let it get very hot. Once the skillet is very hot add the steaks. Wait until one side is lightly browned around 1-2 min) and flip the steak. Do the same for the other side.
Next turn the heat to low. Place a dollop of butter, dash of Worcestershire sauce, and a few drops of hot sauce on each steak and allow to cook. Continue to rotate the meat (generally they are thick and need to be turned on their sides as well) keeping the heat to a low. If the pan starts to dry out, add another dash of Worcestershire sauce while cooking. The meat is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees. Make sure not to overcook ostrich or it will be tough. Serve immediately.
We paired ours with homemade garlic bread and asparagus! Delicious 🙂
